The Test of English as a Foreign Language, commonly known as TOEFL, is a globally recognised standardised examination that assesses the English language proficiency of non-native English speakers. Conducted by the Educational Testing Service (ETS), a private non-profit organisation based in the United States, this exam is primarily designed for individuals seeking admission to universities and institutions in English-speaking countries, particularly in North America. The Test of English as a Foreign Language operates at an international level and measures candidates' abilities across four essential language skills: reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The exam is scored on a scale of 0 to 120 points, with each of the four sections contributing a maximum of 30 points. The TOEFL iBT (Internet-Based Test) is the most commonly taken format, though the TOEFL Essentials and TOEFL Paper-delivered Test are also available in specific regions. Over 11,500 universities and institutions across more than 160 countries accept TOEFL scores for admissions, visa applications, scholarships, and professional certifications.
