The Punjab State Teacher Eligibility Test is a state-level eligibility examination conducted by the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) for candidates aspiring to become teachers in government and private schools across Punjab. This examination is designed to assess the teaching aptitude and subject knowledge of candidates who wish to teach classes I to VIII in schools within the state of Punjab. The PSTET is conducted in accordance with the guidelines laid down by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) and follows the framework established for Teacher Eligibility Tests across India. The Punjab State Teacher Eligibility Test is conducted annually or bi-annually, depending on the recruitment requirements of the state government and private educational institutions. The examination comprises two papers: Paper I for candidates aspiring to teach classes I to V (Primary Level) and Paper II for those wishing to teach classes VI to VIII (Elementary Level). Candidates may appear for both papers if they meet the eligibility criteria for both levels. The PSTET certificate is mandatory for appointment as a teacher in Punjab state schools and is valid for a lifetime, though candidates may re-appear to improve their scores. The Punjab School Education Board oversees the entire examination process, including notification release, application acceptance, conduct of examination, declaration of results, and issuance of eligibility certificates. The examination is conducted in offline mode (pen-and-paper based) at various centres across Punjab and neighbouring states. The PSTET assesses candidates on child development and pedagogy, language proficiency (Punjabi and English), mathematics, environmental studies, and social studies/science, depending on the paper level.
