The Law School Admission Test (LSAT) is a standardised entrance examination designed specifically for admission to law degree programmes in various countries, primarily the United States, Canada, and increasingly in India and other nations. The LSAT is administered by the Law School Admission Council (LSAC), a non-profit organisation dedicated to supporting the law school admission process. The exam measures critical reading, analytical reasoning, logical reasoning, and persuasive writing skills that are considered essential for success in law school. The Law School Admission Test operates at an international level and serves as a crucial component in the law school admission process for Juris Doctor (JD) programmes abroad and now for LLM and integrated law programmes in select Indian institutions. The test is scored on a scale of 120 to 180, with the median score typically around 150-152. Top-tier law schools in the United States such as Harvard Law School, Yale Law School, Stanford Law School, and Columbia Law School require LSAT scores as part of their admission criteria. In India, several National Law Universities and private law schools have begun accepting LSAT-India scores for admission to their undergraduate and postgraduate law programmes. The LSAT has evolved significantly over the years, transitioning from a paper-based format to a digital platform known as LSAT-Flex during the pandemic, and subsequently to the current LSAT format. The exam tests candidates' abilities in comprehension, reasoning, and analytical thinking rather than specific legal knowledge, making it accessible to students from diverse academic backgrounds. The writing sample, whilst not scored, is sent to all law schools to which a candidate applies and serves as a demonstration of persuasive writing ability under timed conditions.
