IMO

The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the world's most prestigious mathematics competition for pre-university students. Established in 1959, the IMO is conducted annually in a different host country and brings together the brightest young mathematical minds from over 100 countries. The competition is organised by the host country under the guidance of the IMO Advisory Board and IMO Foundation, with coordination from participating nations' mathematical societies and educational bodies. The IMO is an individual competition comprising six mathematical problems, each worth 7 marks, for a total of 42 marks. Participants have two consecutive days to solve three problems each day, with 4.5 hours allocated per session. The exam tests deep problem-solving abilities, mathematical creativity, and rigorous proof-writing skills rather than curriculum-based knowledge. Participants compete individually, but countries are represented by teams of up to six students, selected through rigorous national olympiad programmes. The IMO serves as a gateway to identifying and nurturing mathematical talent globally. Top-performing students often receive gold, silver, and bronze medals, with approximately half of all contestants receiving some form of recognition. Many IMO alumni have gone on to become Fields Medallists, renowned mathematicians, and leaders in scientific research. Countries like China, Russia, the United States, South Korea, and increasingly India have consistently performed well, with India being represented by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) under the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research.
