The Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE), also known as the MCI Screening Test, is a crucial qualifying examination for Indian citizens and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) who have completed their primary medical qualification from institutions outside India. Conducted by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), this screening test serves as the gateway for foreign medical graduates to practise medicine in India. The examination evaluates whether candidates possess the requisite medical knowledge and clinical competencies at par with Indian medical graduates. The FMGE is conducted twice annually in June and December sessions, offering candidates multiple opportunities throughout the year to qualify. With a total of 300 marks and a fixed passing criterion of 150 marks (50%), the examination tests comprehensive medical knowledge across 19 subjects covering preclinical, paraclinical, and clinical domains. The computer-based test spans 5 hours, divided into two parts of 150 questions each, with no negative marking. After successfully passing the FMGE, graduates can apply for provisional or permanent registration with the National Medical Commission (NMC) or State Medical Councils (SMC), enabling them to pursue medical practice or postgraduate studies in India. Top participating institutes for post-FMGE internships include AIIMS Delhi, PGIMER Chandigarh, CMC Vellore, Safdarjung Hospital Delhi, King George's Medical University Lucknow, and various government medical colleges across India. The examination is mandatory for all foreign medical graduates, regardless of their country of study, making it an essential milestone for thousands of aspiring doctors annually. The course offered through the FMGE qualification is the right to practise as a registered medical practitioner in India and eligibility to appear for NEET-PG for postgraduate medical programmes.
