The Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT) is a mandatory qualifying examination conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for candidates aspiring to pursue undergraduate architecture programmes in India. This test is exclusively designed for those candidates who have successfully qualified the JEE Main Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech.) examination and wish to seek admission into Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) programmes offered by various premier institutions including the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), and other participating government and private colleges across the country. The Architecture Aptitude Test serves as a crucial gateway for admission to architecture courses, as it evaluates the candidate's aptitude and creative skills specifically required for the field of architecture. The exam assesses drawing skills, sense of proportion, aesthetic sensitivity, and critical thinking ability related to architecture and the built environment. Without qualifying this test, candidates cannot be considered for admission to B.Arch. programmes even if they have secured good ranks in JEE Main Paper 1. The test is conducted once a year, typically in the months following JEE Main Paper 1, and is accepted by over 400 institutions across India. Top participating institutes include IIT Roorkee, IIT Kharagpur, NIT Trichy, School of Planning and Architecture (SPA) Delhi, and numerous other Central and State Government institutions. The Architecture Aptitude Test exclusively tests a candidate's drawing and observational skills, spatial understanding, imagination, and aesthetic appreciation, making it distinctly different from conventional engineering entrance examinations.
