About the University
National Institute of Technology Nagaland, a public higher education technical Institute of National importance, is located at Chumukedima (Dimapur), Nagaland. It is one among the ten NITs approved by the Government of India in the year 2009 under the 11th Five-Year Plan, and has been operational since the academic year 2010-11. The institute has secured a place in the 101-150 rank band in the NIRF Rankings 2025.

About National Institute of Technology Nagaland
This Institute was started initially to function from the academic year 2010-2011, under the mentorship of NIT Silchar in Assam, for two years. At the end of the second academic year, as per schedule, the subsequent academic session of this Institute started functioning from September 2012 at its permanent campus in Chumukedima, Dimapur.
The land of 291 acres (which had been originally allotted for the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Government of Nagaland) was handed over by the Government of Nagaland to NIT Nagaland with a few buildings for the establishment of its permanent campus. The infrastructure for classrooms, hostel, and dining blocks for Boys and girls was built initially with bamboo structures and thereafter, with pre-fabricated structures. Academic and administrative activities were conducted from the existing buildings with necessary refurbishing. Pre-fabricated structures for new classroom blocks, laboratories, and hostels are now complete.
The institute offers programmes at undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels. The main courses include B.Tech (Engineering), M.Tech, M.Sc (Physics and Chemistry), and Ph.D across various disciplines such as Computer Science, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Electronics & Communication Engineering. At the postgraduate level, specific M.Tech specialisations include Computer Science & Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, VLSI Systems, and Communication Engineering, while M.Sc programmes are offered in Physics and Chemistry. The admissions are strictly based on national entrance exams like JEE Main, GATE, and IIT JAM, followed by counselling processes.
The campus is well-connected by air, train, and road. Dimapur Airport is about 14 km away, and the nearest Railway Station (i.e., Dimapur Railway Station) is about 18 km from the campus. Convenient air services are available to and from Kolkata and New Delhi. Regular train services are available from Guwahati to Dimapur. National Highway 29 (NH 29) runs through Chumukedima, connecting Guwahati, which is at a distance of about 300 km from the campus. The capital city of Kohima in the southeast is at a distance of 60 km. Day and Night bus/taxi services are available to these cities from Chumukedima. The ongoing extension work of the railway link from Dimapur to Kohima is passing through the campus of the Institute, and there will be a Railway Station on this campus. Therefore, the Institute will be connected by the railways directly from Guwahati in the near future.
