Indian Institute of Technology Bombay is a public research university and technical institute in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, established in 1958 and designated as an Institution of Eminence in 2018. IIT Bombay was the second Indian Institute of Technology to be founded, with its establishment supported by UNESCO, with funding provided by the Soviet Union. The 545-acre IIT Bombay campus is located between Powai Lake and Vihar Lake, roughly 15 kilometres away from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.
The institute is ranked 3rd in Engineering in NIRF 2025 and 3rd in the Overall category in the latest NIRF 2025 Rankings. Indian Institute of Technology Bombay has been ranked 2nd in India and 129th globally in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) 2026 World University Rankings, with an overall score of 64.8 out of 100. International Collaboration and Exchange Programmes
<div>IIT Bombay has signed MoUs with several universities abroad for student exchange programmes. The institute has established partnerships with prestigious institutions worldwide to facilitate academic exchange, research collaboration, and joint degree programmes. IIT Bombay signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH), Sweden, to strengthen collaborations across the Departments of Environmental Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Economics, Computer Science & Engineering. IIT Bombay and the University of Toronto have an ongoing student exchange program. The institute collaborates with universities in the United States, Europe, Asia, and Australia, including Stanford University, MIT, University of Cambridge, National University of Singapore, and numerous other leading institutions. The institute has Memorandum of Understanding for semester exchange programs with universities in countries like UK, France, Turkey, Scotland, Norway, Belgium, Switzerland and many more.</div>
