The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Thiruvananthapuram (IISER TVM) is dedicated to scientific research and science education of international standards. Traditionally, undergraduate science education in India has kept teaching and research separate. The IISERs were established by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, to bridge this gap. IISER TVM was founded in 2008.
The institute aims to provide high-quality education in modern science by integrating teaching with outstanding research at the undergraduate level and by fostering a spirit of inquiry across disciplines. IISER TVM is an autonomous institution offering a five-year BS-MS programme, in addition to iPhD and PhD programmes in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Earth and Environmental Science, Data Science, and interdisciplinary areas.
IISER TVM is located at Vithura, 40 kilometres from Thiruvananthapuram city, at the foothills of the Ponmudi Hills. Surrounded by lush greenery and a spectacular mountain backdrop, this eco-friendly campus provides a tranquil environment ideal for research and learning. Hostel accommodation is available for all students. The institute also has a fully functional multi-cuisine mess supervised by a student committee.
The faculty are engaged in frontier research in the basic sciences, with a high degree of autonomy and creativity. The institute regularly hosts colloquia and lectures by distinguished academicians and scientists. Such events give students opportunities to meet and interact with world leaders in various scientific disciplines. IISER TVM has developed a range of facilities to promote education with a strong research orientation. These include virtual classrooms, a library, fully equipped laboratories, and a computer centre.
