The Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design and Manufacturing, Kancheepuram (IIITDM Kancheepuram) is a public technical and research institution established in 2007 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MoE), Government of India. The institute is located in Kancheepuram, Tamil Nadu. It was declared an Institute of National Importance (INI), the first IIIT to receive this distinction, and is fully funded by the Central Government of India. The institute is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC). It operates as an autonomous institution under the purview of the Ministry of Education, Government of India.
In terms of national and global rankings, IIITDM Kancheepuram holds a strong position: it features in the NIRF 2025 Engineering Rankings (Band: 151–200), was ranked in the 101–150 band in both NIRF 2023 and 2024 Engineering Rankings, and achieved a commendable Rank 8 in NIRF Innovation Rankings 2023. Globally, it is ranked 951–1000 in the QS Asian University Rankings 2026 and 312 in the QS Asian University Rankings – Southern Asia 2026.
The institute specialises in design and manufacturing-oriented engineering education and research, adopting an interdisciplinary approach with a focus on experiential learning and information science-based modern tools and techniques. IIITDM Courses are offered at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels across engineering, design, and technology. At the UG level, B.Tech and Dual Degree (B.Tech + M.Tech) programmes are available, while M.Tech and M.Des programmes are offered at the PG level, along with PhD programmes in engineering and sciences. Admissions to B.Tech and Dual Degree programmes are through JoSAA/CSAB counselling based on JEE Main scores; M.Tech admissions are through CCMT via GATE; M.Des admissions are based on CEED scores; and PhD admissions are conducted through institute-level written tests and interviews.
