How to become a Homeopath?

A homoeopath is a medical practitioner who specialises in homeopathic medicine, an alternative system of treatment based on the principle of "like cures like." Homeopaths diagnose patients by conducting detailed consultations about their medical history, lifestyle, and symptoms, and then prescribe highly diluted natural remedies to stimulate the body's healing mechanisms. This holistic approach treats the patient as a whole rather than focusing solely on the disease. In India, homeopathy has gained significant recognition as a complementary healthcare system, with millions relying on it for chronic and acute conditions. To pursue a career as a homeopath in India, students must complete a Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery (BHMS) degree, which is a five-and-a-half-year undergraduate programme. This includes four and a half years of academic study and one year of compulsory internship. The course covers subjects such as anatomy, physiology, pathology, materia medica, homeopathic pharmacy, and clinical practice. Students gain both theoretical knowledge and practical experience in diagnosing and treating patients using homeopathic principles. The primary entrance examination for admission to BHMS courses is the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). Qualifying NEET with the required cutoff scores is mandatory for admission to most homeopathy colleges in India. After NEET, candidates participate in AYUSH counselling conducted by the Ayush Admissions Central Counselling Committee (AACCC), which allocates seats based on merit and preferences. Some states also conduct their own counselling processes for state quota seats.
